Daggubati Purandeswari | Minister of State for Human Resource Development (Higher Education) Govt. of India | DAGGUBATI PURANDESWARI, born in Chennai on April 22, 1959 is the second daughter of the divine-blessed couple Dr. Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and Mrs. Basava Rama Tarakam. Married to Dr. Daggubati Venkateswara Rao on May 9, 1979 the couple had two children, Nivedita and Hitesh chenchuram, daughter and son respectively.
She had her schooling at the Sacred Heart High School, Church Park, and completed her college education at the SIET college in Chennai from where she obtained her degree in English language and literature. She also acquired Diploma in Gemology from Gemological Institute of India in Mumbai. Subsequently, she established Hyderabad Institute of Gem and Jewellery in Hyderabad.
She can eloquently read, write and speak four languages... English, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi. Her versatility in Indian dance form 'Kuchipudi' mirrors 13 years of dedicated practice under the able guidance of the 'Kuchipudi' exponent, Dr. Vempati China Satyam.
She was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Bapatla parliamentary constituency in Andhra Pradesh in 2004. From the very initial year she proved to be an effective and dedicated Member of Parliament by bringing to the fore several problems relating to agriculture, education, public health, science & technology, mother-child welfare, natural calamities, and the problems faced by weavers and artisans in the country and raise these issues forcefully in the House for appropriate redress.
She impressively participated on various bills such as Domestic Violence Bill, Hindu Succession [Amendment] Bill, and the Bill on the establishment of special courts exclusively for trying women's cases etc., and made meaningful contributions to each of them. In appreciation of her performance in Parliament, the Asian Age adjudged her as the best Parliamentarian for 2004-'05. Her successful performance in Parliament attracted the attention of the Chairperson of UPA Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and she was inducted in the Union Council of Minister on 29th January, 2006.
