VISAKHAPATNAM: Setting up separate railway zone for Visakhapatnam is on top of the agenda of newly elected MP from Visakhapatnam and Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari.

In an exclusive chat with The Hindu before flying for New Delhi, she said on Sunday that she would stand by the promises she made to the voters during the elections. After consulting all, she would finalise an action plan for overall development of the constituency to fulfil the aspirations of the people.

Admitting that gross injustice was done with regard to carving out of separate railway zone for Visakhapatnam, she said she could get fair knowledge of the needs and aspirations of the parliamentary constituency during her campaigning.

“Railway zone is an administrative decision which I am sure will be done soon. Pollution is another problem which has to be addressed with utmost priority,” she stated. The Minister, who trounced her nearest Praja Rajyam candidate Palla Srinivasa Rao by a margin of 66,686 votes, said the promise made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his last visit to the city on establishment of IIM might not be considered due to the decision not to set up IIM in States where IIT was being located. However, Andhra University Engineering College would be upgraded to an IIT by consulting all the stakeholders.

Ms. Purandeswari said a world-class university was likely to be set up in the city. The Planning Commission was seized of the matter. “I would see to it that it would not go out of Visakhapatnam,” she declared.

On the revival of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, she said she had already spoken to the Defence Minister and the UPA Government would fulfil the promise to bring it (HSL) under the administrative control of Ministry of Defence. It was only a matter of formality, she added.

Speaking at this occasion, Jayaram thanked the guests for taking time and interest in meeting with the NRI in the Bay Area, and offering an opportunity to interact. Jayaram set the tone for the evening suggesting the attendees that the gathering has an intellectual feel and requested the audience to stay away from general political topics, and rather focus on discussing the progress, issues and future of Andhra Pradesh and India. The attendees took this great opportunity to ask several multi-disciplinarily questions related to education, research, growth, job market, and environment. Smt. Purandeswari as well as other guests Sri Buddha Prasad and Sri Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad were very patient and understanding in answering the eagerly waiting audience. It was a very productive evening for both the guests and the attendees in which a great deal of information was exchanged in an informal atmosphere. With different question poring in from the audience, the evening went past the scheduled time, but both the guests and audience have enthusiastically stayed till the end of the meeting in the late night.

At this occasion, President of Federation of Indian Americans (Northern California) and the prominent cardiologist of Bay Area, Dr. Jopra, welcomed the guests on behalf of Indian-Americans and invited the guests to be part of Festival of India, Fremont on August 16th and 17th. Smt. Purandeswari addressing the gathering of NRIs from across India said that they should be proud of the accomplishments that they have made in various fields. She thanked the members of Indian community of San Francisco Bay Area for their warm welcome. She talked about the efforts by the Indian Government in increasing the educational opportunities by establishing more Central Universities across India and increasing the number of premier institutes like IITs and IIMs. Smt.
